CERAMIC & CEMENT
This series of works is inspired by Nhuch’s attraction to “Home Depot” overlooked affordable construction materials, such as cement, bricks and rebars. Inspired by the fragility, uncertainty, chance and chaos, driven from Nhuch’s life experience as an immigrant in NYC, where change and construction never ends, both physically and metaphorically, her exploration of these materials is based on concepts of reinvention, protection, safety, authenticity, and simplicity. The brick sculptures (51 CENTS/EACH, 2019), for example, allude to the idea of poorly-structured abandoned, unpolished houses, referring to homelessness and neglect. Celebrating these materials, she attempts to respond metaphorically to her childhood memories in Brazil as well as to the current state of Los Angeles.
